Like to know what you think

I have a question for you. I am thinking seriously about becoming a police officer. I think in SOME ways I would make a very good cop (in some ways I would make a very bad cop and I have to work on some things.)

One of the reasons I have for becoming a cop is that I have a little bit of a libertarian streak. Frankly, I have been looking forward to not enforcing laws that I think are stupid. I have thought, for example, that I would never arrest someone for smoking weed since I view weed as a relatively harmless drug.

But I've been thinking about another angle. In the US, all laws are passed by the people, or their representatives. Therefore, if I refused to enforce a law, I am saying that I, as a police officer, have the right to ignore the law. If I enter into a situation in which somebody is breaking the law and, upon deciding that the law is stupid, refuse to arrest them, I am saying that my personal opinion is more important that the opinions of the democratically elected leaders who passed the law.

Would it not be better then, as a police officer, to enforce the law, but to agitate on behalf of the people to change the law. Take the Marijuana issue. I would still arrest those who I found smoking marijuana, but I would write to my various representatives and tell them "hey, this law needs to be changed?"
